What is it?

Founded by Dr. Fang Bian in 2007, HIFIMAN is widely regarded as one of the leading manufacturers of high performance headphones and portable audio products. HIFIMAN is especially known for its critically-acclaimed Planar-Magnetic headphones that feature state-of-the-art driver technology. The company also designs and manufactures best-in-class dynamic in-ear drivers which have also garnered awards and rave reviews.

The silver HIFIMAN RE800 are in-ear headphones featuring an aluminum alloy housing, as well as 9.2mm dynamic topology drivers. This construction—a proprietary technology—uses a nano-particle coating applied to its surface, giving the RE800 the clarity and precision of in-ear headphones sporting multiple-driver designs, but without the crossover issues and coherency problems often found in multiple-driver configurations.

With this topology driver, distortion common in other dynamic drivers is sufficiently mitigated. Likewise, whereas balanced-armature drivers can sometimes deliver a flat soundstage and produce high levels of distortion, the topology dynamic design presented herein provides a smooth frequency representation, offers an exciting dynamic response, and again, minimizes distortion. The RE800 in-ear monitors yield a frequency response of 5 Hz to 20 kHz and operate at a sensitivity of 105 dB.

The RE800 housing is really small, this means they should fit all ear shaped and sizes with no issues. The small housing that is rounded and lightweight means these are extremely comfortable once you get a good fit.

How does it work?

The Ideal Dynamic Driver: The Topology diaphragm structure used by HIFIMAN greatly reduces the uncontrolled diaphragm distortions, enabling the operational performance of dynamic IEM’s to an approach to an ever superior, trend towards perfect wave control.

What is a “Topology Diaphragm”? The “Topology Diaphragm” or “Topology Driver” refers to the diaphragm with a special Nano particle coating applied to its surface. The distribution of the coating has distinct geometric patterns. By varying the surface pattern, compound used, the thickness or geometric pattern sound wave formation can be manipulated to achieve the desired audio effect and control. The idea behind the new Topology Diaphragm was inspired by Dr Fang Bian’s Ph.D. thesis that “different Nano materials have differing structures and each of those materials have its own properties”. Therefore, by carefully controlling the diaphragm surface structure you can yield different results in acoustic performance to a degree previously unobtainable.
